    Japan since 1945

    1945-

    • 1946: An elected assembly takes control of the government from the emperor.
    • 1952: US occupation ends
    • 1955: The Liberal Democratic Party forms its first government.
    • 1960: Prime Minister Ikeda Hayato announces plans rapid industrial growth.
    • 1978: Treaty of Peace and Friendship between China and Japan.
    • 1983: Liberal Democratic Party looses election for the first time.
