The Development of Athenian Democracy

594-508 BC

Democracy developed in Athens, not from philosophical or religious principles, but from the practical need to support hoplite armies and to maintain the polis's economy.  After Cleisthenes's reforms, Athens had one of the most extreme forms of democratic government ever seen.

  • 683 BC: The monarchy is replaced with archons.
  • c. 624 BC: Dracon's legal reforms.
  • 594 BC: The reforms of Solon.
  • 560 BC: Peisistratus establishes a tyranny.
  • 510 BC: The tyranny is overthrown.
  • 509-507 BC: The reforms of Cleisthenes.
